The Master Sword is a unique one-handed sword, originally found in a weaker state. It can be awakened and upgraded into the True Master Sword.

Alternatively, it can be turned into the Corrupt Master Sword and upgraded into the Deep Corrupt Master Sword. Fake duplicates of the Master Sword may also be found.

Characteristics[]

By default, the Master Sword is equal in strength to a Dwarven sword and weighs slightly more. The awakened version is equal in strength to a Daedric Sword, and the True version is slightly stronger than a Dragonbone Sword.

The default Master Sword has a slightly slower swing speed for a sword, at the speed of a war axe. The awakened sword has a normal swing speed, and the True sword has a slightly faster speed.

The Sword deals standard critical damage (x1.5 base damage), while the awakened sword has slightly decreased critical damage (x1.29 base damage) and the True sword has increased critical damage (x1.75 base damage). All versions have the standard critical multiplier of x1.0.

All Master Sword variants may be tempered with a Quicksilver Ingot.

Effects[]

While the Master Sword initially has no enchantment, the awakened and True upgrades possess powerful enchantments. They have an infinite enchantment charge and cannot be disenchanted.

The awakened sword Ravages 15 points of Magicka for 20 seconds and deals 10 points of Sun Damage to all creatures, with Undead taking an additional 10 points of Sun Damage. It also has the Light of Evil's Bane enchantment, having a 1/4 chance to cause an explosion of light that deals 25 points of damage to undead within an 80ft radius. The explosion also sets undead on fire for 30 damage and causes them to flee for 30 seconds. Lastly, it may stagger undead within the area.

The True sword increases the Ravage Magicka to 30 points for 30 seconds, and its extra Sun Damage also extends to daedra. Additionally, it deals 2 points of Shock and Fire Damage for 3 seconds.

All variants count as Silver weapons and deal extra damage to undead, ghosts, and werewolves. The True Swords also react with the White Ring and Ivory Ring, releasing sword beams while the wielder is at full health.

Location[]

The Master Sword is located within Ancestor Glade. It sits in a central pedestal illuminated by a shaft of light.

The Glade is southeast from the city of Falkreath. One may follow the road east from Falkreath and travel into the foothills of the Jerall Mountains to find its location.

Lore[]

The Master Sword in Relics of Hyrule is the blade after the events of Skyward Sword and Ocarina of Time. The sword's location in Ancestor Glade is the result of Hyrule's Royal Family seeking to hide the sword during the Last Great War of Hyrule. It is implied that Ancestor Glade is a portion of the Lost Woods. The sword was embedded in an enchanted pedestal meant to only release to someone worthy of carrying the sword. The Master Sword is very old and has suffered a significant draining of its power, given its close connection to the Golden Goddesses, who are significantly less influential in the Fourth Era.

The True Master Sword is a beacon of true goodness and is incorruptible, while the sleeping Master Sword is a blade that has endured so much evil magic that it is teetering on the edge of good and evil.

The Master Sword was used in rituals by nearby Nords to test their warriors' might. No warrior was able to remove the sword from its pedestal and the blade became a legend with no connection to its history. Pilgrims and adventurers would venture to Ancestor Glade, seeking the sword for themselves. The legend died out after generations of visitors failed to draw the sword.

Background and Inspiration[]

The Master Sword was the first Zelda mod JKalenad created. It was uploaded to the Skyrim Nexus on January 3rd, 2013 and the Steam Workshop on February 22nd, 2013. It was designed with the same mindset as Relics of Hyrule: that the Master Sword was an artifact from a lost kingdom deep in Skyrim's past. The original mod featured the Corruption/Awakening system that has remained intact since its inception. The Master Sword model itself was created by Chief-01. The Master Sword was the first item to be integrated into Relics of Hyrule.

In version 6.6.1, the models for the iterations of the Master Sword were updated by Dralkkin. JKalenad was very reluctant to update the models, and required that they be as close to the original models as possible, or else he felt the entire mod would unravel. In these new designs, the change in color from blue to indigo to violet reflects the returning power of the Master Sword, as well as the idea that the Sleeping Master Sword has dark and light energy inside it.

The sword's placement takes inspiration from Twilight Princess and A Link to the Past in that it is located in a wooded glade. Previously, the item descriptions for the awakened and True Master Sword were quotes from the opening cinematic from the Wind Waker.

JKalenad deliberately made the awakening process irreversible, unlike the corruption process. The corruption process is also noticeably easier than the awakening process, symbolizing that is is easier to be evil than it is to be good. However, a corrupt Master Sword can always be purified, one way or another, symbolizing that evil is not the natural state of the sword, or a natural state of being.

The True Master Sword cannot be corrupted because it has ascended to its true nature as a holy weapon and one of the last relics of the Golden Goddesses. JKalenad felt that if the True Master Sword was corruptible, that would imply that true goodness is ephemeral, and that evil is a valid natural state; that no matter how good a person is, they can always be corrupted and swayed to evil. It would also take away the importance of choice: one must choose good or evil, but if one does choose evil, the Goddesses will grant forgiveness and redemption.

Trivia[]

  • The Nintendo Switch version of Skyrim has its own version of the Master Sword, but that one has different attributes from the one in Relics of Hyrule, having a base damage of 12, a weight of 12, is upgraded with Refined Moonstone, and is enchantable instead of possessing its own enchantments.
