Many recurring, non-unique weapons and shields can be reforged, producing a version of the item with higher base stats and other improved qualities.

Item reforging is largely performed at the Terminan Forge. Some items requiring the Ancient Enchanter instead, and some item require that the player knows a certain spell or is carrying a certain item. Reforging recipes do not appear in the smithing menu unless the player has at least one required item and meets other conditions.

An item with a certain bonus (+1, +2, etc.) requires two items with the previous bonus. In other words, a Deku Shield +1 requires two standard Deku Shields, a Deku Shield +2 requires two +1 Deku Shields, and so on.

Some reforged items can be tempered, but if their base power exceeds that of the strongest item in their class (e.g. one-handed, two-handed, bow, etc.), they cannot be tempered. Typically, the +1 and +2 variants can be tempered, with weaker items allowing for tempering of +3 variants, and very rarely +4 variants. +5 variants cannot be tempered.

Bonus Requirements Total Base

Items Required

+0 (base) None 0
+1 Item (x2) 2
+2 Item +1 (x2) 4
+3 Item +2 (x2) 8
+4 Item +3 (x2) 16
+5 Item +4 (x2) 32

An improved item will have higher damage output, as well as higher value. In some cases, the item's speed is also increased, and its weight is lowered.

A reforged item's damage output is based on the damage output of the previous item plus the item's current bonus. For example, A bonus of +1 adds 1 to the damage output, while a bonus of +2 adds +2 to the previous bonus for a total increase of 3 to the item's base power.

As such, an item's damage can be calculated with the formula 0.5x^2+0.5x+b, where x is the bonus, and b is the power of the base item prior to any reforging. The formula's result is rounded.

Below are example calculations.

Simplified Formula Damage

(b = 10)

Damage

(b = 12)

+0 0.5(0)^2 + 0.5(0) + b b b 10 12
+1 0.5(1)^2 + 0.5(1) + b 1 + b b + 1 11 13
+2 0.5(2)^2 + 0.5(2) + b 3 + b b + 1 + 2 13 15
+3 0.5(3)^2 + 0.5(3) + b 5 + b b + 1 + 2 + 3 15 17
+4 0.5(4)^2 + 0.5(4) + b 10 + b b + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 20 22
+5 0.5(5)^2 + 0.5(5) + b 15 + b b + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 25 27

An improved item's value is calculated using the formula p(x^2)+10x+v, where p is the power of the item at its current bonus, x is the current bonus, and v is the value of the base item.

Below are example calculations.
