Frostfall
Arefal was good at what he did. But he did not survive. It was a mistake to enter this ruin. I think I have found a way out, but it is blocked by a Dwarven machine older and stronger than any I have ever seen. It is my only option. Better to die quickly than in slow agony.

The journal is written in a different hand than Volumes 1 through 4. It is found on Arefal's corpse and is written by Sudene, whose corpse is found in the next room.
Sudene mentions the Ancient Automaton.
The tone of Volume 5 is one of near hopelessness.
